Technology is speeding up the auto industry—but culture’s hitting the brakes

The news: Technological advancements are set to transform the automotive industry's cost structure, with managers forecasting 30% efficiency gains within five years, per Bain & Company.

Through these advanced technologies embedded in their operations, carmakers can make significant productivity improvements:

  • Digital platforms. Carmakers are already slashing vehicle development times by over 40% and cutting costs as the platforms synchronize work.
  • Intelligent automation. AI optimizes indirect functions, with humanoid robots poised to boost operations on factory floors.
  • Fabless future. Over 80% of managers expect a shift to an outsourced production model, similar to Apple’s relationship with Foxconn.

Implementation remains a hurdle: Many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers struggle to move beyond pilot projects due to fragmented data, unclear ROI, and organizational inertia, per Bain & Company.

  • Poor data quality is the primary technical barrier. Bad data leads to design errors, idle machines, supply bottlenecks, and flawed forecasts and impedes just-in-time production.
  • A mindset gap also exists, with US leaders expressing more confidence in near-term savings than their European counterparts. This cultural hesitation, more than infrastructure, threatens broad adoption.

What’s next for auto brands: With technologies like AI and automation at its disposal, the auto industry is on the brink of a quantum leap in efficiency, not incremental gains.

Successful automotive companies will be defined by their ability to embed technology to solve core problems. To compete, brands must focus on high-impact use cases, build a clean and integrated data backbone, and radically rethink their operating models to prioritize speed and scalability.
