The news: U.S. Bank topped 11:FS Pulse's first US mobile banking app ranking with a feature score of 94 out of 100, per a press release. But SoFi ranked a close second at 92, ahead of Bank of America (90), Chase (89), and Navy Federal (86).
The ranking analyzed users’ entire journeys across branch-based banks, digital-only banks, credit unions, and fintech platforms.
Zooming in: U.S. Bank's win comes down to breadth.
Its app spans its full product lineup, including checking, savings, credit cards, mortgages, and small-business banking.
That breadth is typically an advantage reserved for incumbents: Eight of the top 10 feature scores went to traditional branch-based banks. These institutions already have a wide range of financial services they can bring into their apps, giving them a head start over narrower digital competitors.
But SoFi posted the highest feature score of any digital-first provider while also ranking third for UX—a combination 11:FS tied to the bank's recent account growth. That makes SoFi a bigger threat to incumbents than fintechs that excel primarily at simplicity or engagement. Cash App and Chime may deliver streamlined experiences, but SoFi is a full-service bank with digital experience.
Why this matters: Building a broad mobile feature set is important, but providers need to prioritize the capabilities consumers value most.
