Shoppers want AI to do the car comparison legwork

Key stat: 44% of consumers are interested in using AI to compare multiple vehicles to one another, the top AI use case for car buying, according to a June 2025 report from CarGurus and NielsenIQ.

Beyond the chart:

  • The appetite for AI-assisted shopping extends well beyond auto. In fact, 62% of AI users across the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific have used AI tools for shopping, with 64% of those users turning to AI specifically to compare products, according to Bazaarvoice.
  • Meanwhile, consumers are growing comfortable with AI taking the wheel entirely. Some 70% of Waymo riders prefer driverless rides over traditional ride-sharing, with over 40% willing to pay more for the experience, according to Obi.

Consumers are asking for smarter ways to weigh their options before they ever step foot in a dealership.

Related EMARKETER reports:

Methodology: Data is from the December 2025 CarGurus and NielsenIQ "2025 Consumer Insights Report." 3,030 US adults ages 18-65 who purchased or sold a new or used vehicle in the past four months were surveyed during May-June 2025. Respondents could qualify as both buyers and sellers. Results were weighted to be representative of the US auto market by demographics (age, gender, income) and market factors (new/used, price point, etc.).
