Marketers lean into podcast adoption but still question ROI and impact

The news: Podcasts are a key focus for marketers, but a confidence gap around efficacy and contributions toward marketing goals persists, per Outcomes Rocket and Health Podcast Library’s Podcasts as a Marketing Powerhouse report.

  • Nearly half (44.9%) of global marketing and communication professionals report that their organizations are using podcasts in some way in their marketing efforts. That includes 16.0% that host branded podcasts, 16.6% that advertise or sponsor external podcasts, and 12.3% that do both.
  • One-quarter plan to get involved with podcasts in the next 12 months, but 31.2% have no plans to do so.

Doubts about effectiveness are the top obstacle for organizations not involved with podcast marketing.

  • Almost half (45.8%) of marketing and communications professionals aren’t convinced that podcasts support their marketing goals.
  • That’s followed by uncertainty about audience listenership (36.3%) or where to start (35%), limited internal resources (31.6%), and budgetary constraints (29.1%).

The bigger picture: Podcast advertising is a maturing market that is prominent in distribution, with the option to launch shows, sponsor creators, or buy inventory across mature networks with minimal effort. The broader barrier to more investment is the same challenge facing other upper-funnel channels like connected TV (CTV)—demonstrating incremental business value.

That pushes the industry’s focus from content creation into attribution and cross-channel measurement. Platforms and measurement providers that can connect podcast exposure to brand lift, conversions, and downstream sales will have an advantage.

Recommendations for marketers: Establish clear KPIs for podcast marketing efforts, whether that’s brand awareness, loyalty building through host-read ads, or direct response, and tailor campaign efforts accordingly.

  • Pair podcast campaigns with companion efforts like newsletters or social clips to maximize outreach efforts.
  • Take advantage of podcasts to reach on-the-go consumers who are commuting, working out, or multitasking.
