The news: OpenAI added a new tier to its lineup—ChatGPT Go. It joins the free model and Plus and Pro subscriptions.
ChatGPT Go is built on GPT-5.2 Instant and offers 10 times more messages and image creations than the free tier. It also has a longer memory to reference past chats. It’s available for $8 per month, a significant discount from $20/month Plus and $200/month Pro.
OpenAI also said it will begin testing ads in the free and Go options in the US soon.
Zooming in: The soon-to-be-ad-supported tiers are coming “so more people can benefit from our tools with fewer usage limits or without having to pay,” OpenAI stated in a blog post.
- OpenAI plans to place sponsored products or services below ChatGPT answers when they align with the conversation.
- Conversations will stay private and won’t be shared with advertisers, Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, posted on LinkedIn.
Why this matters: GenAI is a money vacuum. OpenAI is facing $143 billion in negative cumulative free cash flow before it starts turning a profit in 2029. Affordable subscriptions and ads bring the company much-needed revenues as compute costs and infrastructure skyrocket.
OpenAI was the immediate leader in genAI when it debuted in November 2022, but other AI innovators are eating into its market share.
