OpenAI consolidates product teams around all-in-one AI experiences

The news: OpenAI is shuffling product leadership to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer API into a single product team, with OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman taking over product strategy, per WIRED.

  • Brockman, who will also oversee AI infrastructure, initially took on the product role temporarily when CEO of AGI deployment Fidji Simo began a medical leave in early April.
  • In a memo to staff, Brockman said OpenAI is consolidating product efforts “to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future” and win across consumer and enterprise markets, highlighting how this converged offering could help the company create a super app.

And now that the Elon Musk lawsuit has been dismissed, OpenAI's leadership will have more time to focus on the future of the company.

Zooming out: OpenAI’s Codex agentic AI coding tool is becoming more central to its broader platform ambitions as the company cuts “side quests” to focus on business and productivity tools. It’s being positioned as foundational infrastructure powering both consumer and enterprise offerings, rather than a standalone product.

AI coding tools are exploding in popularity, with companies like Google touting that as much as 75% of its new code is AI-generated. We expect US genAI coding users will reach 40.5 million in 2030, up 31% from 30.9 million this year.

The challenge: Competitive and revenue stresses may be accelerating OpenAI’s restructuring efforts as it misses on financial and user targets and moves closer to a potential IPO.

  • Google and Anthropic are homing in on OpenAI’s territory with chatbot products and AI coding tools, respectively.
  • Anthropic is currently selecting investors for a $30 billion funding round that would value it at $900 billion, per The Information, surpassing OpenAI’s $852 billion valuation.

Recommendations for marketers: Prepare for all-in-one AI ecosystems that could collapse team and data siloes, helping unify AI coding efforts while marketing teams explore adoption of tools like Codex.

As OpenAI blends chat, coding, and developer tools, marketers should evaluate AI search visibility, workflow integrations, and how brand experiences show up inside agent-driven platforms.
