Netflix takes a stab at daily livestreamed podcasts with ‘The Breakfast Club’

The news: Netflix and iHeartMedia announced a daily, live video stream of the radio show and podcast “The Breakfast Club,” which will air weekdays on Netflix. The show, which will begin airing on June 1, is Netflix’s first daily live program.

  • The stream will include nearly three hours of uninterrupted content, with exclusive content like bonus segments and behind-the-scenes moments available during breaks.
  • The announcement is the first major move stemming from a December partnership between the companies, through which iHeartMedia provides Netflix with exclusive video podcast content.

Netflix’s VP of content licensing and programming strategy Lauren Smith said that the partnership is “a big step forward in how we bring culturally defining audio-first franchises to life for Netflix audiences around the world.”

Why it matters: Netflix is moving into prime video podcast real estate as it looks to siphon market share from YouTube, the leading video podcast platform. Seventy-nine percent of podcast listeners watch video podcasts at least sometimes, per Acast, and Netflix’s dominance in the digital video ecosystem—outperformed only by YouTube—could give it a leg up in podcasts.
