Michaels leans into ‘Summerween,’ debuting spooky decor months before Halloween

The news: Michaels is getting a head start on the spooky season. The arts and crafts retailer began stocking its shelves with Halloween merchandise this past Friday, marking its earliest-ever rollout of themed items.

  • The early drop offers selections from its “Summerween” collections that meld Halloween themes with summertime fun.
  • Among the five featured lines is Sweet & Spooky—a ‘90s punk-meets-preppy assortment Michaels calls the “ultimate blueprint for a Haunt Girl Summer,” with heart-eyed skulls, disco ghosts, and skeletons lounging on pool floats.

Why is this happening? Michaels sees an opening to position itself as the go-to destination for Halloween in the wake of Party City’s bankruptcy and Spirit Halloween’ struggles with supply chain disruptions.

  • That opportunity is driving the company to broaden its offerings to include baking supplies, seasonal crafts, and costumes.
  • By launching its Halloween assortment before the summer solstice, Michaels is making an early play for Halloween shoppers' wallets. It’s a strategic move to lock in sales before seasonal expenses—like utility bills and back-to-school costs—begin to crowd out discretionary spending.

Our take: Michaels is betting that even as consumers pull back on discretionary purchases, they’ll keep splurging on Instagram-worthy seasonal décor—especially if they can get it first. From black rose wreaths to candy-colored pumpkins and disco-themed skeletons, the early drop positions Michaels to win over shoppers eager to get a head start on Halloween.
