Grocery chains could have trouble sustaining their in-store health clinics

The trend: Grocery chain locations with in-store health clinics attract more shoppers than stores without healthcare services, according to a recent report from Placer.ai. The report analyzed foot traffic to grocery stores with and without in-store clinics at large chains such as The Kroger Co. and H-E-B.

The Kroger Co. operates about 225 Little Clinic locations across Kroger stores and its family of companies, including Dillons, Jay C Food Stores, Fry’s, and King Soopers. Meanwhile, Texas-based grocery chain H-E-B has approximately a dozen primary care clinics inside stores as part of its H-E-B Wellness initiative.

In-store health offerings drive grocery store traffic: Locations with on-site healthcare offerings drew more visits in H1 2024 than their chain-wide averages.
