The news: Autofill on Chrome will now populate more complex data saved through Google Wallet—including loyalty cards and vehicle and travel information, per a press release.
How we got here: Google Wallet and Apple Wallet are waging a tit for tat feature war to increase their stickiness and draw in new users.
As Apple and Google deepen their wallet engagement, browser integrations are the next battlefield. Google made an earlier update to its Chrome autofill capabilities on desktop last December.
Why this matters: Chrome’s browser dominance is Google’s best shot at taking digital wallet payment volume from Apple. The browser controls 70.3% of global web traffic—over 50 percentage points higher than the next largest browser, Apple-backed Safari, per StatCounter.
By routing more saved information through Chrome’s autofill feature, Google Wallet can lock in more users, who benefit from the all-in-one convenience of Chrome. Google’s browser strategy also positions it to snag more retail ecommerce—and even Gemini-mediated agentic payment volume.
Implication for digital wallets: The wallets that make navigating the online world stand a better chance of also facilitating the most payment volume in-person.
The more information wallets can store—and then access both online and through browser connections—can help reshape payment habits.
