Ally Financial embraces a companywide approach to AI visibility

The news: Ally Financial is reshaping its marketing strategy for the AI era, arguing that success in AI search depends less on traditional SEO and more on a company's overall reputation, per Fortune.

Zooming in: Ally Financial CMO Andrea Brimmer told Fortune that everything from customer experiences to employee treatment contributes to how large language models (LLMs) understand a brand: "If somebody has a horrible customer experience, that's going to hurt us in the LLMs." She noted that decisions a company makes that affect the customer experience now influence whether AI systems recommend the company.

Why it matters: User reviews are the clearest public expressions of customer experiences. And they influence the broader online reputation that LLMs synthesize when generating recommendations, becoming another signal that helps AI determine whether a company is trustworthy—alongside media coverage, expert rankings, and owned content.

EMARKETER's “AI Visibility Index" finds that reputation extends well beyond a company's own website, underscoring the importance of credible external validation. Although financial services recommendations rely heavily on brand-owned sources, AI models also frequently cite third-party publishers (e.g., Forbes and NerdWallet).

Recommendations for banks: Ally has internal AI-focused teams to correct misinformation, feed accurate information into LLMs, and study consumer behavior. AI visibility requires dedicated, cross-functional oversight.

As AI assistants become a discovery channel for financial products, banks need processes to monitor their representation in AI-generated answers; quickly correct inaccuracies; ensure product information is up-to-date; and coordinate across marketing, communications, product, and customer service.
