Google’s AI Mode and Search call for distinct commerce strategies

The news: AI Mode is surfacing vastly different products and prices than Google’s traditional search engine, per research from Productrise that tracked over 2 million product pages in search results pages and AI Mode answers.

  • Just 1.28% of products that appeared on traditional search engine results pages (SERPs) also showed up in AI Mode for the same query on the same day.
  • When the same products did appear in both experiences, the prices were different 38.1% of the time.
  • When prices varied for the same product, AI Mode reflected a higher price 68.4% of the time.

Why it matters: Google’s AI Mode and Search offer two distinct shopping experiences, despite both appearing in many of the same consumers' searches. However, as more consumers adopt AI-powered shopping tools, the discrepancies between AI Mode and Search may become less consequential to brands. We forecast that 34.0% of US internet users will partake in AI-powered shopping by 2030, up from 20.5% in 2025.
