GLP-1 price cuts from Novo heighten need for clear messaging

The news: Novo Nordisk will cut US list prices for its leading GLP-1 drugs by up to 50% starting next year. The list price for Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus will drop to $675 per month, which marks a 50% reduction for Wegovy and 35% for Ozempic. The cuts apply to the new Wegovy pill and injections, Ozempic injections, and the Rybelsus pill.

Why it matters: Patients whose prescription drug coverage is tied to a drug’s list price could benefit from Novo’s cuts. For example, if a health plan requires coinsurance based on a percentage of the list price, a lower list price would reduce what patients pay for their medication.

With this move, Novo slashes GLP-1 prices for some insured patients. It’s separately offering discounts in the direct-to-consumer channel. That means Novo’s list prices will undercut Eli Lilly’s starting next year (pending any Lilly cuts), with self-pay rates that are lower or comparable—potentially helping Novo win new patients as Lilly’s market lead widens.

Implications for weight loss drug marketers: Prescription drug pricing is notoriously confusing, and patients need clear guidance. Headlines like “Wegovy price slashed in half” oversimplify the issue and can leave consumers confused at the pharmacy counter.

Brands and marketers in the GLP-1 space should use the channels where consumers already engage with weight loss content—like social media—to clearly explain what price changes do and don’t mean, who may benefit from different pricing channels, and be present to proactively answer patient questions.
