The news: More than 35% of Gen Zers and millennials who use AI chatbots for mental health turn to it because they’re afraid of being judged, per a recent Cognitive FX survey.
- 32% cited affordability as the main reason they use AI for mental health.
- 23% say long wait times for therapy spurred them to use AI.
- 10% cited the lack of access.
- Almost 1 in 4 (38%) use AI chatbots weekly for general emotional support, while 22% use them daily.
The online survey queried 400 Americans ages 18 to 45 who have used AI chatbots for mental health support.
Why it matters: For younger people, AI chatbots are becoming a first-line alternative for judgment-free, low-cost mental healthcare.
However, the American Psychological Association issued a health advisory last year acknowledging that while AI can provide benefits, especially to address underserved and unmet needs, clinical oversight and federal regulations are necessary.
Implications for healthcare providers and AI platforms: Gen Zers and millennials are leading the shift to AI for mental health support, drawn to tools that feel nonjudgmental and accessible. While platforms are adding guardrails, the healthcare system can’t ignore the growing role AI plays in emotional support or how it’s reshaping expectations of care.
Along with improved safety measures, AI platforms need to clearly message what these tools can and can’t do. Healthcare providers, meanwhile, should check in with both parents and patients about whether they use AI chatbots and offer non-judgmental support.
