EU court limits Meta’s use of personal data for ads

The news: The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that Meta and other social media platforms can’t universally use personal data for ad targeting.

  • The court stated that hyperpersonal user data pools can’t be used for ad personalization, even if users consented to ads.
  • The ECJ’s ruling also determined that social networks can’t use personal data indefinitely and that time limits should be set for when the collected data needs to be either erased or reviewed.
