Elevance requests repayment from doctors for overprescribing Ozempic

The news: Health insurer Elevance Health is requesting over $1 million in repayments from healthcare providers for allegedly inappropriately prescribing Ozempic to their patients, according to a Bloomberg report.

Digging into the details: Elevance’s Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield health plan contacted a small number of providers for their alleged excessive off-label prescribing of Ozempic.

  • For context, Ozempic is FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes but is commonly prescribed off-label for weight loss. Elevance said that Anthem only covers Ozempic for diabetes.
