DoorDash bets on AI, returns, and fulfillment to grow beyond delivery

The news: DoorDash unveiled a sweeping set of products at its Dash Forward event that point to its ambition to provide the infrastructure that connects consumer intent, local merchants, and fulfillment.

The details: The announcements illustrate four key areas where DoorDash is heading:

DoorDash aims to become the operating system for restaurants, not just a delivery marketplace. Its new DashOS platform connects ordering, reservations, loyalty, guest management, and marketing to help restaurants manage customer relationships across DoorDash, direct channels, and dine-in visits from a single system. The platform pushes DoorDash deeper into restaurant operations while giving merchants more tools to turn one-time transactions into repeat business.

DoorDash is broadening its reach beyond its own interface. Its new Model Context Protocol (MCP) connector lets companies embed DoorDash into workplace AI tools and agents, enabling employees to search, order, and track deliveries without leaving tools like Slack. New text-to-order capabilities let consumers find restaurants or products, build personalized carts, reorder groceries, get lower-cost substitutions, and check out without opening the app. The moves aim to remove friction by making DoorDash available wherever consumers already are, rather than requiring them to open a separate app.

DoorDash is positioning itself as an incremental growth channel for retailers, not just another place to fulfill existing demand. New partnerships with Macy’s, Anthropologie, The North Face, Vans, and Timberland—debuting just weeks after DoorDash added Costco—extend the company’s “mall in your pocket” vision beyond restaurants. DoorDash also launched Dasher Returns, which lets consumers pay a flat fee to have a Dasher pick up eligible returns. DoorDash says as many as 90% of retailers’ first-time shoppers on its platform are incremental, which suggests the platform is helping merchants reach new customers rather than simply shift sales from other channels.

DoorDash is expanding its fulfillment network with a focus on convenience. The promise of fast delivery drives 43.5% of US adults to make quick online purchases, per a recent EMARKETER and DoorDash survey. DoorDash is leaning into that behavior with DoorDash Air, a purpose-built drone delivery system designed to integrate with merchants’ existing operations. Its Autonomous Delivery Platform will determine whether a drone, robot, or Dasher is the fastest and most reliable option for each order, giving DoorDash more ways to speed up delivery.
