Dollar General’s Popshelf switches gears to woo higher-income customers

The news: Dollar General’s Popshelf stores announced an updated app and loyalty program, as well as a revamped store format, to bolster its appeal to higher-income shoppers.

Sparking joy: Popshelf, which sells higher-margin, largely discretionary merchandise like home goods, beauty, and seasonal items, is looking to draw shoppers in with a “joyful and fun experience”—much like off-price retailers have with their treasure-hunt layouts.

  • All of the retailer’s stores were recently updated to its latest format, which includes a refreshed layout and a larger assortment of branded cosmetics, décor, toys, DIY options, books, and specialty pet options.
