India is rapidly becoming a leading market for AI-powered commerce. Widespread genAI adoption, growing acceptance of agentic shopping, and consumers' openness to personalized AI experiences are accelerating the evolution of digital commerce.

India leads the world in genAI adoption

GenAI users in India will surge 40.1% YoY to 406.5 million in 2026, per our forecast, giving the country the world's highest genAI penetration among internet users, at 50.7%.

Adoption is fueled by the country's young population, large tech workforce, and widespread access to low-cost or free AI tools from companies like OpenAI and Perplexity. However, limited internet penetration means that only 28.4% of the total population uses genAI, per our forecast, leaving more than 1 billion people yet to adopt the technology.

Shoppers in India are also among the most active users of genAI, with 59% of digital buyers using AI as an online shopping tool, per a February 2026 DHL survey.
