The news: Coinbase will launch its first credit card on the American Express network this fall.
- The card doesn’t use crypto for transactions but gives users cash-back rewards in the form of Bitcoin.
- The card will offer between 2% and 4% in Bitcoin-denominated cash back depending on how much money (in Coinbase’s USDC or otherwise) the cardholder has in their Coinbase wallet.
- Amex will also offer its traditional card protections.
The card is only available to Coinbase One subscribers. The membership currently runs at $29.99 a month, but with the new card, Coinbase plans to offer a Basic tier for $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
Significance for cryptocurrency: With crypto guidelines taking shape under the blockchain-friendly Trump administration, crypto firms are jumping at the opportunity to expand into mainstream markets.
