The data: Nearly all US consumers are satisfied with their bank's digital experience, raising the bar for how financial institutions differentiate themselves, according to an October American Bankers Association survey conducted by Morning Consult.
Mobile apps were the most popular banking channel: 44% of consumers used mobile apps most often to manage their accounts, compared with 20% who favored online banking and 10% who preferred branches.
Why it matters: Banks have mastered the mobile app. But when nearly every customer has a satisfactory digital experience, offering a reliable, easy-to-use app is no longer enough to attract and retain customers.
A convenient app can encourage frequent engagement, but it doesn't guarantee that customers will consolidate their deposits, borrowing, and other financial activities with one institution.
Implications for banks: The next era of banking competition will be defined by how effectively financial institutions move beyond digital convenience to become more central to customers' everyday financial lives.
Banks can stand out by evolving from transactional platforms into providers of personalized financial guidance—and, eventually, customer-approved financial management.
Attracting and retaining customers depends on helping them achieve financial goals rather than simply offering more in-app products. Banks could proactively identify savings opportunities, guide customers through major milestones like homeownership, and eventually automate routine financial tasks within customer-defined limits.
