The news: Apple released its iOS 18.2 beta on the same day news broke that it cut production of the iPhone 16 by about 10 million units—7 million more than previous estimates.

  • iPhone 16 sales have been sluggish, likely because it shipped without the much-anticipated generative AI (genAI) features.
  • Even so, there’s “no evidence yet that Apple Intelligence could boost iPhone shipments in the near term,” said Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities.
