Amazon reimagines beauty shopping to promote discovery

The news: Amazon’s Holiday Beauty Event will return for the sixth consecutive year, running October 19 to November 1, the company announced.

  • The sale will span multiple beauty categories, including skincare, makeup, fragrance, men’s grooming, and wellness.
  • Shoppers can score deals on prestige brands like Armani, Clinique, and Dyson, alongside mass-market favorites such as Burt’s Bees and Olay.
  • Amazon will also offer 48-hour flash deals throughout the event, with discounts of up to 40% on select categories.

Zoom out: Unlike Amazon’s other major sales, the beauty event is open to all shoppers, not just Prime members—revealing the retailer’s ambitions to gain share in the category. Having established itself as a place to go for replenishing beauty staples, Amazon sees a larger opportunity to become a destination for discovery and inspiration.

To that end, Amazon is using personalization and AI to make it easier for shoppers to find brands and products relevant to their needs. Customers can prompt Alexa for Shopping to receive more tailored recommendations based on their specific skincare concerns, desired product attributes, and preferred price range, eliminating the need to trawl through Amazon’s vast marketplace.

Amazon is also reconfiguring the beauty shopping experience as consumer expectations change. The company is “shifting from category silos to intent-based shopping,” Wendy Franks, general manager of health and beauty at Amazon.com, told Women’s Wear Daily, which means organizing products based on needs—such as “solutions for dry, sensitive skin”—and incorporating items across beauty, health, and wellness categories.

Implications for beauty: Amazon’s efforts to improve the beauty experience are helping to drive more spending to the retailer. We expect Amazon to account for over one-third of online beauty sales this year, and its share will continue to grow through 2028. The retailer’s fast shipping and free returns are proving to be a major draw, enabling Amazon to siphon beauty dollars away from department and drug stores and attract more premium brands to its marketplace.
