The news: Telehealth clinic Doctronic, an online healthcare company that uses AI to triage patients before looping in a human doctor, raised a $40 million Series B round. It’s the company’s third round in the past year.

Doctronic markets itself as a “personal and private AI doctor.” Through a Utah state-sanctioned "AI sandbox," Doctronic is also now the first platform in the US legally authorized to autonomously prescribe refills for 190 non-controlled maintenance medications (like blood pressure or asthma meds) without a human doctor’s sign-off.

Why it matters: Doctronic is drawing industry criticism, particularly over its Utah pilot and concerns about insufficient guardrails in its technology.

• The American Medical Association commented that AI without physician input poses serious risks to patients and doctors.
• Meanwhile, researchers at AI security firm Mindgard recently showed they could trick Doctronic’s system into giving unsafe medical advice and improperly increasing prescription dosages for drugs like Oxycontin.
• For its part, Doctronic said these types of input-based exploits aren’t unique to its platform, and that the Utah model’s AI can only renew existing prescriptions—adding it would have rejected the prompts used in the Mindgard experiment, per MedCity News.

Implications for healthcare AI companies: Investors see the appeal of AI companies that can effectively triage patients as the traditional healthcare system remains overburdened and understaffed. However, regulators are likely to tighten scrutiny over companies that position themselves as AI doctors that offer treatment services (e.g., Rx refills).

Technology intended to diagnose, treat, mitigate, or prevent disease falls under the FDA’s medical device authority. Doctronic brands itself as an AI doctor yet simultaneously claims it does not practice medicine or provide medical advice or care—confusing, potentially contradictory messaging that could raise red flags for both regulatory authorities and consumers. AI platforms providing any level of healthcare services must not only carefully assess their marketing claims but also prepare for state and federal regulators to catch up with AI’s rapid deployment in the space and reassess what requires approval.
