Payment Transaction Volume and Value in Canada, by Method, 2014-2016
MethodologyData is from the December 2017 Payments Canada report titled "2017 Canadian Payment Methods and Trends." The report was provided by the Bank of Canada, Interac, INTRIA, Symcor, Technology Strategies International, Euromonitor and RFi Group. Data was collected from payment service providers and networks on an aggregated annual basis, based on actual payment instrument use data. Experts and market survey research are used to fill in data gaps for payment instruments, such as cash, where a full data set may not be available. Market survey data is used to provide detailed insights on the trends observed. This survey includes results from Ipsos Reid's Canadian Financial Monitor (CFM), Ipsos Reid's Personal Cardholder Study (PCS) and RFi Group business surveys. The study includes value transfers and transactions that may not specifically be used in the exchange for goods or services, but excludes securities and derivatives transactions (and trends) and virtual currencies (e.g., Bitcoin) and transactions that clear and settle through Payments Canada's Large Value Transfer System (LVTS).
