The data: Half of US women (51%) report facing at least one major diagnostic or provider communication obstacle in the past five years compared with 39% of men, according to a July Gallup-Pivotal survey. Specifically, women were significantly more likely than men to report symptom dismissal, diagnostic issues, unanswered questions, and conflicting advice.
Why it matters: Women have more of a burden to push for the care they need than men do. Forty-two percent say they’ve had to advocate for their own health in the past five years compared with 26% of men, per Gallup.
Those differences persist even when women and men seek care for the same type of condition.
Implications for healthcare and pharma marketers: The data paints a clear picture of systemic barriers: women are routinely left without diagnoses, clear answers, or validation from their care teams.
Closing these gaps requires actionable solutions. Patient-facing AI tools like symptom-checkers and health coaches offer a way to break through these barriers, empowering women before and after care by helping them articulate questions to providers or pursue follow-up when symptoms are ignored.
But AI can just as easily entrench these barriers as eliminate them. Evidence suggests AI can inherit and replicate gender bias rather than correct it, per Pharma’s Almanac. For healthcare and pharma marketers evaluating or building AI tools, rigorous bias testing is the only way to ensure technology expands access to care instead of automating its roadblocks.
Beyond the clinical imperative, overlooked care gaps represent a multi-billion-dollar market opportunity. While funding across women's health remains severely constrained, first-movers targeting these unmet needs are seeing immediate commercial validation. Midi Health, for example, reached a $1 billion valuation in February 2026 and has insurance coverage for 45 million women. And Oura shifted its focus to women, who now make up 72% of its 5 million paid members, according to its recent IPO filing. Those examples show how focusing on women’s overlooked needs can translate into commercial opportunity.
