The news: Western Union launched Stablecard, a standalone app pairing a digital wallet with a Visa secured credit card in partnership with Rain, per a press release. 

Stablecard lets users receive Western Union transfers via USDPT and spend anywhere Visa is accepted, including through Apple Pay and Google Pay. 

The app is live in 37 markets, with Western Union targeting more than 60 by year’s end.

Why this matters: Stablecard adds another destination to Western Union’s digital lineup, which already includes a core money transfer app, the WU+ banking app in Europe, and a separate digital wallet in Latin America. 

On Western Union's Q2 2026 earnings call, CEO Devin McGranahan said competitive intensity in the digital business has increased as retail volumes soften: Branded digital revenues rose 7% year over year while total revenues fell 1%.

Rivals are answering that same competitive pressure from inside their existing apps rather than building new platforms:

• SoFi launched its stablecoin-backed remittance services, letting members send SoFiUSD stablecoins overseas directly within the SoFi app.
• Zelle plans to route stablecoin-powered cross-border payments through participating banks’ apps.
• MoneyGram built a single mobile app combining fiat and stablecoin transfers.
• And PayPal lets Xoom users send money via PYUSD.

Implications for payment providers: Each app Western Union launches sends customers to different platforms and branding depending on the service they need, rather than reinforcing one relationship. 

A remittance sender who already uses Western Union's core app or a retail counter now has to decide whether a separate download is worth it to access USDPT, adding friction as competitors remove it. Without a clear link between Stablecard and Western Union's branded app, the company risks losing the cross-selling advantage central to its digital strategy and fragmenting its digital customer base.
