The news: Visa launched Intelligent Authorization, which helps acquirers to modernize their payment processing through one API connection, per a press release.

Visa Intelligent Authorization helps incumbents process large volumes of complex data through one system that can resolve transactions through multiple card networks.

It can also optimize routing decisions based on network rules, industry paradigms, and regional regulations. Eligible acquirers on the Visa Acceptance Platform can use this API as their main processor or as an extension to existing infrastructure. 

Why this matters: Visa Intelligent Authorization helps the network lock in loyalty for participants within its payment ecosystem, as developments like stablecoins, agentic commerce, and digital wallets threaten to disrupt its dominance. 

With AI agents and stablecoins capable of running on alternate payment rails, features like Visa Intelligent Authorization help acquirers facilitate payments that occur off Visa’s rails on a centralized platform, giving them wraparound coverage.

Looking forward: Fully operational agentic commerce isn’t here yet, but players that establish infrastructure to support AI agent traffic for payments will reap early windfalls. 

Payment behaviors are already changing: 

• 74% of Asia Pacific shoppers already use AI-powered tools during their shopping journeys, per a Visa-commissioned YouGov survey. 
• And nearly half (46%) of US teens use AI chatbot once a week, per Pew Research, suggesting Gen Alpha and Z consumers will likely adopt agentic commerce as they age into adulthood.

Implication for payment providers: Digital payments are quickly changing, demanding new infrastructure to handle complex volume from new payment methods.
