Visa, Mastercard adopt Claude’s agentic commerce program

The news: Anthropic debuted merchant- and consumer-facing agent blueprints for Claude, per a press release.

Visa, Mastercard, Shopify, and Accenture are among early adopters.

Claude’s blueprints give merchants a plug-and-play solution to serve internal needs like tracking inventory or sales data and a consumer-facing agent that helps shoppers. These agents can remember users’ preferences and surface images of products within the chatbot.

Why this matters: Anthropic has been quieter on the agentic commerce front compared with its competitors.

Getting major networks like Visa and Mastercard and merchant providers like Shopify to develop agents on its platform could boost Claude’s profile in the agentic commerce space—especially as platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot consolidate influence around ecommerce integrations, per Logicbroker.

Implications for payment providers: Agentic commerce is in its infancy, giving plenty of time to form an agentic payment provider hierarchy.

Payment providers can gain share by focusing on merchant-facing commerce solutions, addressing concerns regarding data security, implementation costs, fraud risks, and integration with existing systems.

Payment providers that prioritize strong governance, transparency, and data controls are likely to earn merchant loyalty first.
