US adults think businesses have a responsibility over safe AI use

Key stat: 68% of US adults think the government and businesses share responsibility over preventing the spread of false information through AI, according to a December 2024 Gallup and Telescope Foundation survey.

Beyond the chart:

  • US adults hold businesses most responsible over AI ramifications when it comes to negative effects on workers who lose jobs, and least responsible when it comes to threats of national security.
  • Nearly two-thirds of US adults feel uneasy about AI-generated ads, according to Civic Science.

Use this chart: Marketers can use this chart to advocate for responsible AI policies in their workplace and the industry at large, as well as show how a poor approach to AI implementation could affect brands’ reputations.

Methodology: Data is from the Gallup and Telescope Foundation report titled "Americans Use AI in Everyday Products Without Realizing It." 3,975 US adults ages 18+ were surveyed online during November 26-December 4, 2024. The sample was weighted to be representative of the US Census Bureau Current Population Survey. For results based on the total sample, the margin of sampling error is +/-2.6 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. Telescope Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on the responsible advancement of technology.
