Urban Outfitters’ digital head tells EMARKETER how the brand aims to turn college students into long-term customers

The news: Urban Outfitters is returning to college campuses for the third consecutive year with UO Game Day, a three-city tour featuring live music, pop-ups, giveaways, and customization. The tour includes stops at the University of Arizona, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Rutgers University, with Nike, Levi’s, and Converse as sponsors.

Why is this happening? College students are a core customer base for Urban Outfitters, and Game Day gives the retailer a “meaningful opportunity to both reach new customers and deepen engagement with those already part of our community,” Julia Draper, head of digital and ecommerce at Urban Outfitters, told EMARKETER. “That makes Game Day both a customer acquisition opportunity and a loyalty driver.”

The context: UO views back-to-campus as a months-long customer journey rather than a single shopping event. Interest begins as early as May and accelerates through move-in in late July and August. Its August “All Together Now” campaign—its first back-to-campus commercial, featuring 76 students from more than 10 universities—and Game Day give UO multiple touchpoints with students along the way.

Game Day also builds on relationships UO develops at other points in the college calendar. During sorority recruitment, the brand partnered with 10 chapters for a coordinated TikTok campaign featuring UO outfits, then reengaged those groups through personalized sorority-house experiences during Game Day.

UO tailors activations to individual campuses, such as matching concert lineups to local music preferences, helping its presence feel specific to each community.

The approach bridges students’ online and offline lives. “Our data shows that the majority of Gen Z see shopping as a social activity,” Draper said. TikTok can generate awareness, while stores and campus activations give students a place to discover and try products with friends.

Implications for Urban Outfitters and other retailers: UO recognizes that there’s no shortcut to building lasting relationships with college students. Those connections develop over time, which requires UO to show up throughout their four-year journey—from move-in and recruitment to game days and graduation.

That means measuring more than immediate buzz. UO tracks user-generated content, social engagement, earned media, and event traffic alongside customer acquisition, sales, UO Rewards enrollment, and repeat engagement. Together, those measures show whether activations strengthen relationships over time.
