The news: State fairs are cutting or freezing admission prices, expanding discounts, and adding more entertainment to keep a traditional splurge affordable for cost-conscious households.
Why it matters: The value approaches have coincided with strong turnout, suggesting consumers aren’t abandoning discretionary experiences. Iowa, which maintained the same gate admission price as last year, set an attendance record this year—estimated spending rose 8.2% YoY to $95.8 million, per the Common Sense Institute. New York drew its biggest attendance since before the pandemic, and Ohio cited record attendance and revenues, with visits up 5.8% and concession sales up 12.6%.
Strong crowds are also making fairs more attractive to brands. E.l.f. Beauty and Levi’s have used fairs for experiential pop-ups, per Modern Retail, giving them access to consumers already primed to spend on an outing.
But keeping the overall experience affordable is getting harder. Dominic Palmieri, co-owner of fair-food concessionaire Odyssey Foods and known as The Midway Gourmet, told Marketplace in August that business had been “a little bit tight,” citing diesel, insurance, and grocery costs. He said many attendees are working families for whom a trip to the fair is a special treat.
Implications for retail: State fairs can show retailers multiple ways to engage value-minded shoppers—keep the cost of entry low, give shoppers enough for free to make the trip worthwhile, and leave room for optional splurges once they arrive. Compared with outings built around a single activity, fairs can offer families several hours of food, shopping, and entertainment in one place, with more control over what they ultimately spend. Strong attendance figures from many fairs suggest consumers will still open their wallets when the experience feels varied, flexible, and worth the initial cost.
