Southwest debuts lounges ahead of premium card launch

The news: Southwest Airlines began construction on its first four lounges ahead of its premium card launch in 2027, per a press release.

The new card will be issued by JPMorgan Chase. Southwest has not disclosed the annual fee.

The first four lounges will be in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville. Southwest is planning at least seven more lounges in the coming years.

Why this matters: Southwest has never branded itself as a high-end airline. The airline previously distinguished itself with no seat assignments, “Bag Fly Free” promise, and strong customer satisfaction

Its push into premium cards and lounge access shows how Southwest is trying to model the premium strategies of competitors like American, Delta, and United. Amid concerns that middle- and lower-income households are pulling back on discretionary spending, catering to the wealthiest households has emerged as the safest bet for growth: The top 10% of households now generate the same volume of discretionary spending as the bottom 70%, per the Bank of America Institute.

Implications for travel brands: Southwest’s recent payment updates, including a partnership with Klarna and a debit rewards card, fell more in line with the brand's ethos of serving middle-income travelers. As Southwest pivots upmarket to capture more front-of-cabin clientele, the airline will need new strategies to win over premium travelers—especially when faced against the power of general travel cards like American Express Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Moving upmarket also costs a pretty penny: Southwest’s Austin lounge construction is estimated at $55 million, per the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Travel brands newer to the luxury space will have to invest in infrastructure and acquisition aggressively. Targeting travelers looking for comfort may chart a way forward: “Affluent comfort-seekers” spend the most out of all types of premium travel shoppers, and 47% of the cohort spends over $10,000 annually on trips, per LEK.
