The news: Sam’s Club is finding success helping premium local brands expand nationwide, per Business Insider.
Zooming in: Rather than bringing local products into specific regions, the warehouse club is using its fast delivery and fulfillment operations to give those items national reach.
For example, after a test run of Arkansas-based Onyx Coffee’s Doyenne brand in three northwest Arkansas locations showed strong demand, Sam’s Club expanded distribution to more than 50 US clubs and SamsClub.com. Sam’s Club told Business Insider that Doyenne sales nearly doubled within the first four weeks of online availability, and nearly a quarter of orders are now shipped to areas where the product isn’t stocked in stores.
Oklahoma City-based Kize nutrition bars followed a similar path, scaling from a limited in-store test to nationwide distribution, and other emerging brands are gaining similar traction.
Implications for brands: Sam’s Club’s momentum—driven by strong growth, younger members, and a clear convenience edge through Scan & Go and expanded Express delivery service—is creating new opportunities for emerging brands beyond their home markets.
Its ability to take local products national is rooted in trust. Consumers rely on Sam’s Club’s curation, from its Member’s Mark private label to its broader assortment, which lowers the barrier for consumers to try unfamiliar brands.
That combination of trust and distribution scale is turning Sam’s Club into a launchpad. It allows brands to quickly reach national audiences and drive repeat demand. Over time, that can create a virtuous cycle: The more success stories Sam’s Club produces, the more brands will look to partner with it, further strengthening its ability to deliver growth that is difficult to replicate through traditional retail expansion.
