The news: Quince made its UK debut this week, marking the online retailer’s first expansion outside of North America. The company is banking on consumers’ desire for high-quality products at affordable prices, as well as their growing inclination to purchase dupes.
How we got here: Quince has benefited from—and helped fuel—the growth of dupe culture. Fifty-eight percent of consumers purchased a dupe in 2026, according to a Circana report, reflecting both shoppers’ desire to save money and a growing perception that the quality gap between name brands and their copycats is narrowing.
Quince is working especially hard to emphasize the latter by comparing each of its products with similar, more expensive offerings from other brands. For example, the UK product page for Quince’s best-selling Mongolian cashmere sweater pits the item against offerings from Reiss, Cos, and N.Peal in a handy table that makes clear the differences in cashmere quality, pricing, and delivery and returns policies, presenting Quince’s product as the clear winner.
Implications for retail: Quince’s style of transparency could serve it well at a time when cost of living and inflation are consumers’ top concerns. The declining influence of mid-market brands, coupled with years of price hikes that have put luxury products out of most customers’ reach, have created an environment extremely favorable to retailers like Quince that promise to deliver both quality and value. Beyond that, UK consumers have already shown themselves to be highly receptive to dupes: Roughly two-thirds have at least occasionally purchased a dupe version of a beauty or personal care product in the past year, according to our latest Pulse of the Consumer: UK Personal Care and Beauty survey.
For Quince and other brands, high-quality dupes also present an opportunity to attract higher-income consumers, who are, like their less-wealthy peers, highly attuned to value. Around half of US households with annual incomes of $100,000 or more have purchased apparel dupes, up 14% from two years ago, according to Circana. Companies that can show their products are as good, if not better, than more expensive brands stand to grow their share of spending as shoppers focus on price and quality over brand name.
