The news: Oura is postponing its initial public offering, citing "uncertainty in the IPO market.” The smart ring maker maintains that demand for shares has stayed strong since it filed for a US listing earlier this month.
Oura and its backers were seeking up to $2.2 billion at a valuation above $15 billion, and the offering drew roughly four times as many orders as shares available, per Bloomberg News. However, Oura likely could not secure its target price amid bond yield and oil price volatility, according to Axios.
Zooming out: Oura joins a growing list of companies pulling back from public debuts as market volatility unsettles the IPO market, including nuclear power services firm Holtec Nuclear Corp and insurance provider Bamboo Insurance Services Inc.
Why it matters: Oura’s delay comes despite strong fundamentals heading into the offering. Oura previously reported growing product and subscription revenues and recently turned profitable. It posted revenues of $1.21 billion, up 74% from the same period a year earlier. The company said it recently turned profitable, earning $60.8 million in the period, up from $1.6 million in the same period last year. Oura says it has 5.7 million paying members, and paid membership doubled YoY to about 5 million customers.
Implications for digital health companies and investors: It's unclear whether investors are buying Oura’s health intelligence pitch or still see it as a hardware company operating in a single product category exposed to shifting consumer preferences, competition, and questions about the smart ring market’s long-term growth. For context, Oura has been expanding beyond sleep and fitness into areas like women’s and metabolic health, positioning itself as a broader digital health platform.
Delaying the IPO could help Oura avoid testing its valuation in an unstable market. But waiting carries its own risk: Better conditions may not arrive before the company’s strong growth momentum slows.
