OpenAI could buy Chrome to sidestep AI browser build, accelerate ChatGPT's adoption

The news: OpenAI wants to buy Chrome to integrate its AI models on more smartphones and leapfrog creating its own browser.

OpenAI would throw its hat in the ring if the Department of Justice (DOJ) forces Google to sell Chrome, ChatGPT head of product Nick Turley said at a Tuesday court hearing, per Bloomberg.

Why does it matter? Turley said the purchase could help OpenAI build better products—for example, Operator, its autonomous web agent—by using real-time information while creating an AI-first browser experience.
