The news: OnePay launched OnePay Personal Loans powered by Upgrade, per a press release.
All personal loan applications occur within the OnePay mobile app and can pay out as soon as the same day.
How we got here: Fintechs have capitalized on traditional lenders tightening their underwriting standards, launching products to serve middle- and lower-income households who have been frozen out from lines of credit.
Why this matters: OnePay is competing for fintech loan value and a whole new scale—a $50,000 maximum borrow amount outstrips Cash App Borrow’s low-level lending approach or even PayPal’s Pay Monthly installments, which go up to $10,000.
This also propels OnePay’s effort to be a super app; it already boasts banking, installment, crypto, investing, and tax services.
Implications for fintechs: As more households access personal loans through fintechs, competitors will need to figure out how to differentiate their products.
Marketing these products based on generous credit limits, low APRs, or flexible repayment plans could help fintechs stand out from the pack.
