NYT’s AI adoption could boost efficiency but spark reader mistrust

The news: The New York Times (NYT) is training reporters to use AI tools for editing, summarizing, and coding, per Semafor.

  • The publisher allows generative AI (genAI) use for creating promo copy and SEO headlines but prohibits using AI to draft or significantly alter articles.
  • The New York Times also built an in-house beta summarization tool called Echo, which can condense NYT articles, briefings, and interactive elements.
