The news: The home insurance insurtech Hippo has rolled out a new, AI-driven claims workflow for customers and employees. At the center is Clara, a conversational voice agent that enables a fully digital first notice of loss process.
How it works: Clara captures and structures claims data, flags inconsistencies, and routes cases on intake. Agentic AI takes over from there, handling triage, flagging potentially fraudulent claims, reviewing documents, and generating claim summaries, while aerial imagery cuts the need for on-site inspections. Since deployment, initial customer contact is now happening in under two hours on average, per Hippo.
Zoom out: Property insurance claims volume hit roughly 3.5 million through Q3 2025 and are projected to reach 4.3 million to 4.5 million for the full year, per Verisk. (The Q4 2025 property report hasn’t been released yet). Hippo says its new architecture could support a 30-35% increase in claims volume without adding headcount.
Implications for insurers: Legacy claims workflows can't keep up. J.D. Power found in 2025 that the average time from first notice of loss to final payment was more than 44 days, the longest since the study began in 2008. Speed isn't the only problem. Satisfaction scores are more than twice as high when customers say communication with their insurer is very easy rather than somewhat or very difficult, per J.D. Power. The Hippo rollout is a bet that automating the process end-to-end solves both at once: faster cycle times, and adjusters freed up for the communication work that actually moves satisfaction.
