The news: Hims & Hers is adding an AI tool to help its customers interpret lab results and offer personalized insights. Hims' Labs AI follows its November launch of direct-to-consumer lab testing services in partnership with Quest Diagnostics.
Why it matters: Consumers are already using AI to understand personal health information, including lab and test results.
However, trust in general-purpose AI is nascent, so Hims and others are trying to add a layer of clinical validation to build credibility in medical environments. Just 4% of adults who use AI for health-related information strongly trust its accuracy, while another 29% somewhat trust it, according to a December 2025 Gallup and West Health survey. Additionally, 11% say the AI health information or advice they received was unsafe. While Hims or Quest AI tools aren’t inherently more trustworthy than general-purpose chatbots, they do include oversight from healthcare providers.
Implications for telehealth and AI companies: Healthcare organizations’ AI-powered lab insights won’t stop consumers from using genAI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude for health purposes. But these tools help telehealth providers build trust with AI in clinical settings. Plus, they’re meeting growing consumer demand for AI-driven medical guidance.
The new lab features also signal a broader shift in the AI healthcare opportunity, from general consumer queries to embedded tools in telehealth and provider workflows. Companies that deliver these medically integrated experiences will have an edge over those offering standalone, health-focused AI products.
