The news: Zocdoc and Google are partnering to bring agentic healthcare appointment scheduling to Gemini users. The Zocdoc connected app in Gemini lets users find real-time appointment availability and book with a provider. Users 18+ can use it now, with Gemini Spark support coming in the next few weeks.
Why it matters: Over one-quarter (28%) of consumers who use AI for health information do so to search for options for where to get care, per EMARKETER January 2026 survey data. And a separate May survey shows that among people who search for new doctors, 36% said AI tools were influential, per rater8.
Information discovery, however, doesn’t always lead to health appointment booking. Google has an opportunity to move potential patients from intent to action. With the Zocdoc integration, Gemini can help users find and narrow provider options (e.g., “find a cardiologist near me”), view up-to-date availability, and book appointments—all while taking their reason for visit and insurance details into account.
While Google doesn’t disclose how many people use Gemini for health-related questions, health is likely a significant use case, given that it ranks among the top uses of genAI overall. Although specialized AI tools may offer some agentic scheduling capabilities, Zocdoc gives Google significant scale from the outset: millions of people use Zocdoc to find and book care each month, across a nationwide network of 200,000 providers across 200+ specialties, and some 10,000 insurance plans, according to the company.
Implications for healthcare providers and AI companies: For healthcare providers, AI is emerging as another patient acquisition channel. Providers already have an incentive to keep their information current on marketplaces like Zocdoc, given how many patients book appointments there. But this becomes even more important as AI tools draw on those platforms’ provider data and availability to help patients find and book care.
For leading AI players, health is becoming a key area of competition not just for answering questions, but for owning the next action. Most leading AI companies launched consumer health tools this year, but Gemini now stands out for its agentic scheduling capabilities. Rivals may face pressure to build or partner for similar features to keep more of the healthcare journey within their platforms.
