Eli Lilly obesity campaign makes the case for GLP-1s for seniors beyond weight loss

The trend: Eli Lilly launched an obesity campaign to raise older adults’ awareness of the new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. That initiative began in July and gives Medicare enrollees access to select GLP-1 weight loss drugs at just $50 per month, including Lilly’s Zepbound and Foundayo as well as Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy.

Why it matters: Weight loss drug ads have had limited relevance for seniors because Medicare did not cover the drugs for obesity, giving most little reason to act on ads they might have seen.

The opportunity is different with broad Medicare coverage. The GLP-1 Bridge program lowers out-of-pocket costs for qualified patients and expands the addressable market to an estimated 3.8 million beneficiaries, per a June KFF analysis.

Lilly’s campaign positions GLP-1 use as part of maintaining mobility, independence, and quality of life in later years. That’s not just a more interesting story to tell: obesity is linked to functional decline, chronic disease, and increased mortality, per an October 2025 Harvard study, making weight loss drugs a potential aid to healthier aging.

Implications for GLP-1 marketers: As older adults become a larger audience for GLP-1 marketers, differentiation among drugmakers, telehealth prescribers, pharmacies, and GLP-1-adjacent wellness products will depend on addressing age-related needs. For example, 15% to 25% of weight loss on GLP-1 drugs comes from muscle rather than fat—raising medical concerns for seniors, who already lose muscle at an accelerated rate after age 60.

GLP-1 marketers have an opportunity to address seniors’ needs through credible education and clinician involvement that emphasizes health improvements and longevity. Support services can become a differentiator by pairing medication prescribing and dispensing with senior-centered nutrition counseling, strength and resistance training guidance, side effect support, and closer clinical monitoring to support safe and sustained use.
