Sports betting apps are now mainstream in the US. Since legalization, a wave of new bettors has put betting platforms front and center in sports media. EMARKETER projects the number of US online bettors will cross 50 million in 2026.
The federal legalization of sports betting in 2018 kicked off a steady boom for online sportsbooks. The days of triple-digit growth rates are over, but new state laws are still driving notable growth. Here are key figures from EMARKETER’s forecast on US sports betting, a market set to reach nearly $211 billion in wagers in 2027.
Online betting will grow by $31.65 billion over the next two years
The amount wagered on apps and websites in the US will grow from $172.55 billion this year to $204.20 billion in 2027. YoY growth saw an uptick in 2024, the first full calendar year of legal online sports betting in Kentucky, Maine, Vermont, and Florida. North Carolina legalized the practice in March 2024, likely contributing to that bump. Growth will slow in 2025 but be somewhat buoyed by Missouri, which will become the 39th state with legal sports gambling on December 1, 2025.
