The news: A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation to eliminate advertising tax deductions for pharma companies. Led by House Rep. Greg Murphy (R-NC), who’s also a physician, the “No Handouts for Drug Advertisements Act” would end tax write-offs for drug advertising expenses.
Zooming out: Lawmakers have unsuccessfully attempted to enact similar pharma ad restrictions in both the House and Senate beginning in 2009, with multiple proposed laws as recently as December.
However, the latest push, which is led by a Republican for the first time, follows Trump administration enthusiasm under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to ban pharma direct-to-consumer advertising.
