Comscore gives podcast advertisers episode-level targeting data for smarter media buys

The news: Comscore is adding integrations across major music streaming platforms including Acast, Libsyn, SiriusXM, Spotify, and Triton Digital that will offer advertisers episode-level data on podcasts to support precise targeting, per a press release. This data will be supported by show transcriptions through Comscore’s Proximic contextual targeting solution.

This will help advertisers collect information beyond basic show- and genre-level data, adding opportunities for more relevant ad placements and brand protection based on the content of each podcast episode, per Comscore.

Deeper targeting can also help brands more precisely reach the 44% of US adults and 62% of Gen Zers ages 18 to 29 who listen to podcasts at least monthly, per CivicScience.

What it means: Episode-level contextual targeting, deeper brand safety opportunities, and lower friction could make podcast inventory look and act more like connected TV (CTV), display, and online video inventory. It could also set the medium up to be as easy to buy as other digital channels.

Brands don’t allocate budgets solely based on where consumers spend their time; they also consider how buying, optimization, reporting, and brand safety fit into existing processes, making simple cross-channel planning and unified strategies crucial.

However, some doubts persist about podcast ad buying—nearly half (44.9%) of global marketing and communication professionals are using podcasts in some way in their marketing efforts, but concerns about effectiveness and whether podcasts support marketing goals are a top barrier to further adoption, per Outcomes Rocket and Health Podcast Library.

Recommendations for marketers: If podcast inventory can be bought using the same DSP workflows, contextual segments, and measurement standards as other media, it’s easier to justify shifting incremental dollars. As contextual targeting becomes a universal layer across formats, brands should:

  • Test whether more granular placements improve brand lift, engagement, or conversion versus broader show-level buys.
  • Press platforms for standardized measurement tools and transparent reporting that let podcast campaigns be planned and optimized as clearly as CTV, display, and online video.
  • Consider podcast partners based on their content’s alignment with brand voice and product pitches, not just on audience reach.
