The news: In H1 2026, Citi moved its US retail banking business into its wealth division, alongside its Citigold and Citigold Private Client wealth management offerings. The move is intended to make it easier to coordinate investment decisions, client acquisition, and the way banking customers are introduced to wealth services.

For customers, Citi’s strategy promises a more unified banking and investing relationship. Deposits and investments already count toward Citi’s relationship tiers, allowing customers to unlock greater benefits by consolidating assets with the bank. Citi is also investing in digital and advisory capabilities to make those relationships easier to manage, per The Financial Brand.

Zooming in: The long-term opportunity is substantial. Citi estimates its US retail banking and Citigold customers hold about $3 trillion in assets outside the bank—the majority of the $5 trillion in external assets held across its broader wealth client base.

Citi has already made progress in deepening customers' wealth relationships, offering a strong foundation to build on:

• Since launching a simplified banking model in 2022, about 325,000 retail banking customers have upgraded to Citigold. Those who subsequently receive dedicated Citigold Wealth Advisory coverage generate nearly 2.5 times more investment revenues on average.
• Investments are becoming a larger part of Citi wealth clients’ balances, rising from 42% in 2022 to 52% in 2026. Citi expects that share to reach the high-50% range in the near term.

Implications for banks: Citi’s results will test whether tighter integration between retail banking and wealth can translate existing customer relationships into greater share of their assets. Banks should watch its performance going forward and compare it to pre-integration metrics

As they monitor, banks must keep in mind that organizational integration alone won’t deepen wealth relationships. They must pair it with a customer experience that makes moving between banking and investing seamless.
