Capital One debuts standalone travel app

The news: Capital One launched the Capital One Travel App, per a press release.

Consumers will be able to plan and book trips, access exclusive offers, locate lounges, identify preferred hotel chains, and receive live travel alerts—among other features.

This app will decouple Capital One’s travel platform from its banking app into a new, standalone product.

Why this matters: Capital One’s app strategy diverges from most of its peers’ approaches, which focus on driving repeat, prolonged user attention to one central hub for financial services, travel needs, and shopping deals.

However, other issuers have also bucked the trend: American Express launched a standalone travel app before its Platinum refresh. Amex cited a majority (81%) of respondents in a company-sponsored survey saying they wished there was an all-in-one app that paired booking capabilities with travel inspiration.

Capital One may be trying to emulate Amex’s strategy while going after a slightly less wealthy demographic—Capital One’s Venture X has a $395 annual fee, compared with Amex’s $895.

The push to a wholly separate app may also have been easier than adding new user interfaces to its embedded travel platform. A new app allows for a UX/UI do-over: A must for winning loyalty from mobile-first Gen Zers and millennials.

Implications for issuers: Improving and investing in the mobile app consumer experience will be necessary to capture more travel spending. We forecast that 60.3% of all digital travel sales will be conducted over mobile devices this year.

And 2026 is gearing up to be a heavy travel year: 36% of consumers expect to spend more on travel than they have in the past two years, and 36% of shoppers anticipate spending the same amount, per a YouGov survey. Issuers with smoother app experiences stand to pick up more of this volume as consumers increasingly expect better UX/UI experiences for booking.
