Over 90% of US consumers worry about AI misinformation

Key stat: A large majority of US consumers are somewhat (26%), very (32%), or extremely (34%) concerned about AI spreading misinformation, according to an August 2024 survey from the Pew Research Center.

Beyond the chart:

  • Almost two-thirds of worldwide millennials (62%) trust AI to give them accurate information, per November 2024 data from Five9.
  • Only a quarter of worldwide baby boomers trust AI's accuracy, according to Five9.

Use this chart: Retailers who have rolled out chatbots can use this chart to understand consumers' baseline for trust, and can build in more safeguards to ensure the accuracy of their AI initiatives.

Methodology: Data is from the April 2025 Pew Research Center report titled "Americans Largely Foresee AI Having Negative Effects on News, Journalists." 5,410 US adults were surveyed as part of Wave 152 of the American Trends Panel (ATP) during August 12-18, 2024. The margin of error is +/-1.6 percentage points.
