In 2021, Spain will have the highest podcast penetration rate (30.0% of internet users) among countries with limited English proficiency, and Mexico will post a higher rate (25.8% of internet users) than much of Europe.

    As with live radio, penetration was far greater in high-income homes. Live TV viewing was less popular among younger internet users than with their elders in Q1. Some 74.1% of those ages 16 to 24 had watched live broadcast TV in the prior month, but that share was over 90% for the 35-to-64 group.

    Digital audio penetration remains lower than in several other parts of the world. Just 56.4% of respondents had listened to digital music, podcasts, audiobooks, or other audio content in the month prior, a slight decline since 2020. Time spent each day with music streaming had risen by 7 minutes, to 1:04 on average.

    In podcast penetration and usage, Canada ranks No. 2 among select countries in the Edison and Triton study: 38% of adults there were monthly podcast listeners, 2 percentage points less than in the US. The Media Technology Monitor polling put Canada’s monthly podcast listenership at 31% of the adult population in fall 2020, up from 26% two years prior.

    Smart speaker penetration is lower in Germany and France. In Germany, there will be 11.4 million smart speaker users, or 13.7% of the population. By 2022, users will total 12.5 million users (14.9% of the population). In France, the number of smart speaker users—which has grown robustly in recent years—will reach 9.5 million, or 14.1% of the population.

    Research from IDC and Morgan Stanley estimates that US smart speaker penetration will reach 40% at the end of 2019. Ultimately, the implication for a stagnant smartphone market is minimal for marketers. People aren’t giving up their smartphones, and in fact, most are increasing the amount of time they spend on their phones—they’re just not buying the newest handsets right away.

    Radio penetration in Canada is expected to comprise 84% of the population in 2019, a rate that is consistent with the percentage of licensed drivers in Canada (84.7% last year). Radio remains firmly entrenched for immediate commuter news like weather and traffic. Print is in the steepest decline among traditional media formats.

    An Adobe Digital Insights survey from January 2019 looked at smart speaker penetration among people ages 35 to 54 who use smartphones (as most do), and found nearly half of them also had smart speakers. Epsilon’s MacPherson sees Xers transitioning some tasks from phone to speaker—for instance, getting weather and traffic news.
